Two new events launched for adrenaline junkies who want to make a difference

Hi Sunshine News readers,

We have some VERY exciting news here at The Sunshine Fund as this week we have launched TWO new events to raise money for children living with disabilities, additional needs and terminal illnesses in the North East region.

To kick things off, we first launched our brand new event which will be taking place on Friday the 25th August 2023: The Sunshine Zipline!

This one’s for the adrenaline junkies and for those wanting to step outside their comfort zone and experience something unique and truly unforgettable. Those who step up to the challenge (myself included!), will glide through the air at incredible speeds and heights and soar past some of Newcastle’s most iconic landmarks as it’ll take place at the Tyne Bridge.

As well as soaring through the city and taking in breathtaking views, participants will also know that they’re contributing to a fantastic cause and supporting a small charity so we can continue our work to fund life-changing equipment to local children. The beauty of the Sunshine Zipline is that it’s open to all ages and abilities and, even better, wheelchair users are welcome, which makes it the perfect event for all – whether it’s done alone, with friends, work colleagues or as a family.

What better way to end the summer holidays than taking on an exciting challenge and making lasting memories? Due to safety reasons, weight restrictions do apply, please visit our website to find out more.

We have limited availability on this event and we’re expecting places to fly out(!), so if you’d like to join us you best be quick! Spaces cost £35 each, and we ask each participant to fundraise an additional £50 minimum so we can continue our work. Please visit www.thesunshinefund.org/zipline for more information.

We’re thrilled to be working with local organisation, Jelly Legs, who will be facilitating this event with their team of highly trained guides. We spoke to James Johnson, the Director at Jelly Legs, who said: “I'm so happy to be working with The Sunshine Fund, a trusted charity that I know, to be leading on their summer event!

"It makes sense too, as the Tyne Bridge is where the charity began, and it's a great way of doing something fun and exhilarating as they come up to their 95th birthday! We're so pleased to be facilitating this event for The Sunshine Fund as it's one of the longest standing charities in the North East who share Jelly Legs' ethos of providing accessible events for all - we really hope lots of families get involved!”

We’re taking things back to where the charity began with the Tyne Zipline; The Sunshine Fund originated almost 100 years ago following a visit from King George V when he attended the official opening of the Tyne Bridge in October 1928.

Moving on to our second event launched this week; we’ll be returning to Chillingham Castle for our Scarefest Challenge! Just in time for Halloween, this highly-anticipated and super exclusive event will take place on Sunday 22nd October 2023.

We are given exclusive access to Chillingham Castle where brave challengers have the opportunity to spend the evening exploring areas of the castle that aren’t available to the public. We team up with Spiritus Paranormal and North-East Medium, Stephen Crawford, where we use professional paranormal investigative equipment to try and contact with the other side…

Just some of the resident spirits include the Blue Boy and Lady Mary Berkely, and, perhaps most famously, John Sage, otherwise known as 'The Butcher of the Scots'. Last year we all left with goosebumps after witnessing chandeliers swinging and doors banging whilst trying to communicate with this ruthless executioner!

This event is lots of fun but it isn’t for the fainthearted, which is understandable given its gruesome history, making it one of, if not the most haunted castles in the UK. It’s no surprise that it’s been featured on countless podcasts such as ‘Morbid’, ‘GraveYard Tales’ and ‘Haunted UK’, as well on TV shows such as ‘Most Haunted’ and, more recently, Mark Wright's 'A Wright Family Holiday'.

Tickets to this event cost £40 which covers all exclusive access to the grounds, plus use of professional equipment as seen in shows like 'Most Haunted' and 'Ghost Hunters International'. Challengers pledge to fundraise £300 for this event so we can continue our work.

Again, spaces are very limited on this challenge, and to register we ask those interested to register their interest by emailing me at sophie.revell@thesunshinefund.org.

Thank you for reading – we hope some of you might be interested in joining us!
