There’s still space left on our Hadrian’s Wall Trek if you’re feeling up to the challenge…

Hi Sunshine News Readers,

I think I speak for all of us when I say that January felt like the longest month ever! But February is finally here and we’re already noticing slightly later sunsets and ever so brighter mornings.

Many of us set ourselves challenges and resolutions in the new year, and I’m sure lots of us pledged to be healthier and fitter in 2024. Whether you’ve stuck to your goals or perhaps fell off track, it doesn’t matter. We have several opportunities for you to keep progressing, or to get you back on track and to motivate you to revisit your targets.

We still have a few spaces left for our Hadrian’s Wall Trek which takes place on Friday, May 24 and will be led by the trusted team at Challenge Northumberland. Trekkers will be pushed to their limit as the 13-mile hike includes steep inclines with the highest point being at 1,000ft – and they must complete it within 8 hours.

The route is budding with local history and participants will explore some our region’s most iconic landmarks, such as Thirlwell Castle, the Housesteads Roman fort, Steel Rigg, Walltown Crags, Crag Lough and, of course, the recently felled Sycamore Gap. We have an enthusiastic team signed up and we can already tell that it’ll be a fun challenge, with a real sense of comradery!

We have a few spaces left so if you’d like to join Team Sunshine for our 2024 trek, please contact Amanda.Keddie@thesunshinefund.org to book your place! Why not get a team together and take on the challenge with friends or family?

Registration costs £40 and trekkers pledge to raise a minimum of £250 each. All money raised in this challenge will support local babies, children and young adults living with disabilities, additional needs and terminal illness in our region.

We will be there to support trekkers with every part of the journey; we will be providing training tips and opportunities, with the help of Challenge Northumberland and The Gym Group, and we will provide advice and opportunities to ensure all challengers complete their fundraising. I will also be joining the team on the trek, and it’s set to be a fantastic day!

Is running more your thing? Don’t worry, we have plenty of other opportunities to support our small, local charity, whilst also setting yourselves personal goals and challenges! How about the North East’s (and the UK’s!) most famous half marathon? We are working with True Potential for the sixth year as they’ll be sponsoring our Great North Run campaign again for 2024!

The ballot is open until February 12 if you’d like to enter and run on behalf of The Sunshine Fund (just let us know so we can send you a t-shirt!), or we have a limited number of charity spaces, meaning you can book through us and get a guaranteed place. If you take a charity place you pledge to raise a minimum of £300. Spaces have been popular this year so get in quick – please contact Amanda.Keddie@thesunshinefund.org to secure your spot!

Is a half marathon too much? Want to run to raise money for our charity without having to get lots of sponsors? Not to worry… we can’t reveal too much yet but let’s just say that one of our much-loved and very popular events will be returning to Newcastle Quayside in June.

Without spilling the beans completely, we’ll just say that there’ll be an opportunity to take part in a 5K that is suitable for all abilities – whether you’re a fun runner or an elite racer. Watch this space for the full announcement!

And if you’re a parent of a child who feels inspired by the Great North Run and other physical events, they have the opportunity to race down by the Quayside too at the Junior and Mini GNR! After our hiatus last year we will be returning on Saturday, September 7 bigger and better where we will be cheering our Team Mini Sunshine on, whether they’re racing in the Mini, Junior, Wheelchair or Mini 50 wave!

We’ll have our usual VIP Sunshine zone with lots of entertainment, and every kid that races for The Sunshine Fund will receive their own t-shirt plus a certificate recognising their achievement. If your child would like to join our team, please sign up here and let us know they’re taking part so we can add them to our list! Just drop an email to Amanda.Keddie@thesunshinefund.org and we’ll take care of the rest.

You can see all our upcoming events here. Want to take on a challenge to raise money for us so we can continue funding life-changing equipment to local children who need it, but none of our events tickle your fancy? Look no further. We have a list of other mass participation events you can sign up to and choose to do for us. Just let us know you’re doing it and we’ll happily share your story on our socials and in our weekly column! Click here to find out more.

Thanks for reading,

Sophie X
