Hello Everyone,
It’s Bev the family coordinator doing my first column!
Did you see us last night on ITV Tyne Tees News? How excited were those Sunshine Kids?
It’s all going on this weekend, The Great North Run is happening and our team have been busy for weeks behind the scenes getting everything organised and ready.
We have T-shirts, balloons and treats for our amazing kids. We may even have a couple of special guests popping along to wish our Sunshine Kids good luck!
If you’re planning on heading down on the day, pop over to our VIP area located in the grassed area of NE1’s ‘Summer in the City’ to say hi!
Thanks to NE1 for allowing us to use this space, which enables our children and parents to have a safe space to take time out from the crowds on the day.
You might also catch our Princess friends from 11:30am-1:00pm from Dreams and Smarty Events, whose time has been kindly donated by True Colours Theatre.
Lauren has worked closely with the event organisers at The Great North Run to ensure the accessible and wheelchair races go ahead this year. They are so important to our families, the kids love taking part and it’s such a wonderful achievement for them all.
We are proud of each and every one of you!
The Mini and Junior Great North Run was a huge miss in 2020, it gives our Sunshine Kids the opportunity to take part in this iconic local sporting event, where their disability does not exclude them from taking part and having fun.
Team Mini Sunshine runners Liam and Heath both agree saying: "It’s a great day, we love taking part and being with our friends. The best bit is when people cheer when you run past them."
Oscar says he is really looking forward to it: “It was so much fun last time and we’re raising money for The Chronicle Sunshine Fund, watching our sponsor money go up is great!”
Freya agrees and as a beneficiary of the fund she said: “I want to raise money and help other children to have equipment they need to learn or play, just like me.”
We’re also incredibly proud of our adult runners this year too, with many of them going above and beyond to raise funds for us.
Fingers crossed the weather stays glorious and the crowds are out in abundance to offer cheers and treats!
Good luck to you all, plus our amazing event partners True Potential and their GNR team!
I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing good luck to all our runners and wheelers this weekend, we can’t wait to see many of them tomorrow, we are already so proud of them all.
Check back next week to see how our team got on and how Monday morning went going into school with their medals and boasting rights that they were part of The Great North Run.
I’d be telling the world if I ever managed it!
Have a great day everyone and please give our runners, walkers and wheelers a cheer as they pass. I hear it helps them go faster!
Love from
Bev x
