Much-loved Sunshine Run celebrates its 20th anniversary

We have BIG news to share with you all this week, this year's Sunshine Run will be monumental!

Our much loved 5k run, turns 20 this year and we can't wait to welcome you all back to Newcastle Quayside on Wednesday, June 14 to turn the Toon yellow once again! Join us as we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of this ever popular event to support children with disabilities, right here in the North East.

Can you believe we're celebrating 20 years of The Sunshine Run?! Our much-loved 5K is back and bigger than ever before as we celebrate two decades of running in support of children and young adults with disabilities and terminal illnesses in our region.

Our charity patron and Paralympian, Stephen Miller, will join us at the start line where Sunshine runners will set off from the Millennium Bridge on Newcastle's Quayside and head to Newcastle Business Park and back to cross the finish line in a spectacular photo finish with the Tyne's bridges as a backdrop. The race is flat and fast and perfect for club, fun and team runners looking to achieve a PB, work towards a fitness goal or as a great warm up for this years Great North Run.

Now, as a non-runner myself, I deemed last year's exceptional sunshine to be a good thing. It certainly made for excellent photos and created a real party atmosphere for the spectators, supporters and families who joined us to cheer on over 250 runners...

Alas, apparently 23 degree heat isn't what you want when doing a 5k run... luckily for our runners there were plenty of refreshments available from The Urban Garden and other venues so our runners could enjoy a well earned drink as they listened to the North Tyneside Steelband and soaked up the post run atmosphere. It truly was a fantastic evening.

Back by popular demand for 2023, our elite 5K wave will start ahead of the main run to offer competitive and club runners the chance to beat the crowds and race for time. Chip timing will also return, as we know how important it is for our runners to get an instant, accurate race time. Some things never change though and we will be welcoming runners of all abilities to our main 5K run taking place at 7pm.​​

For the third year running our wonderful friends at Stagecoach will be our event partners for this iconic event. Stagecoach are synonymous with the North East and they share our vision for a brighter future for all children living with disabilities in our region.

We have significantly grown the Sunshine Run over the last three events, introducing chip timing and a new Elite Wave and its all been thanks to the help of Stagecoach our event partners. Stagecoach North East Managing Director, Steve Walker, said: “We are so pleased to be supporting the Sunshine Run for a third time, this year, and to be able to play our part in helping The Sunshine Fund to continue their tradition of making a huge difference to the lives of local children with disabilities.

“As the official charity partner of Stagecoach’s Slatyford depot in Newcastle, our dedicated team supports Sunshine Fund in lots of ways throughout the year and the Sunshine Run is a standout fundraising initiative. We are extremely passionate about making a difference to the lives of local families and always grateful for the opportunity to be involved."​

All participants will receive a t-shirt to wear during the run as well as a medal on passing the finish line. We want you to help us celebrate by sharing your memories of the event over the past 20 years.
