Making magical moments possible – but we couldn’t do it without our supporters

Hi Sunshine News Readers,

We’re now just THREE weeks away from our highly anticipated Sunflower Ball, which will be taking place on Friday, March 15 at The Grand Hotel, in partnership with our wonderful event sponsors at Eldon Square. As we put together the last preparations for the evening, we want to shine a light and focus on what the event is all about; celebrating the children we have had the pleasure of supporting and funding equipment to for almost 100 years.

Here at The Sunshine Fund, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, and we help facilitate this by funding life-changing equipment to children living with disabilities, additional needs and terminal illness in the North East region. These pieces of equipment provide enrichment, they can be instrumental in a child’s development, can make a family’s day-to-day life more comfortable and manageable, open the doors to endless opportunities, and often have infinite physical and mental benefits, too.

However, they aren’t funded by the NHS or Local Authority, and can cost in their thousands, which the average family simply cannot afford. Take Delaney and Indie for example, who have both been funded trikes from us. Trikes are one of our most requested items of equipment due to the physical benefits as well as the impact they have on a child’s wellbeing.

Delaney’s mam said, “Thank you for providing this beautiful trike for Delaney, days out don’t always have to be in her wheelchair buggy, they are a lot more fun now!”

When Indie received his bike, his mam, Sarah, told us, This trike will help Indie develop the strength in his legs to keep his mobility as strong as possible. Indie has always wanted to be able to race his school mates but couldn’t push the pedals on his bike. Now he can race with the rest of them!

"We received an update recently from Sarah, who told us: “Two years later and his bike is a valuable asset to Indie. His new thing is to get on his trike to go and catch Pokémon on his Pokémon Go app.”

Take Sam, who we part-funded a Trekinetic GTE Powerchair for at the end of 2023. This piece of equipment would have cost the family £15,000, which is money that most people simply couldn’t afford.

However, the impact that this has had on Sam and his family is priceless. Within a couple of weeks of Sam having his chair, the family took a trip to the beach where Sam, for the first time, could join in and explore different terrains with ease.

In Sam’s own words, he turned to his Dad on the beach and said, “Dad, this is just great, I love it". Gary, Sam’s Dad, said, “A massive thank you for providing essential funding to allow Sam to reach new boundaries. Snow, sand, rocky roads and muddy paths will no longer be a barrier or an issue to this young explorer.”

We also recently heard from one of our families that we supported years ago. Cameron, who is now in his 20s, was funded a power chair when he was younger.

His mam, Jo, sent us some recent photos to show how long pieces of equipment can last, and the long-term impact our charity can have on a family. She told us, “Cameron’s still using the power chair and he turned 26 in August. Your help continues after adulthood!”

However, we can’t do our hard work without the support of our donors, and with demand in equipment growing, and the cost of living affecting all of us more and more, we need your support now more than ever.

So, how can you help us? There are many ways readers can support our small charity; visit www.thesunshinefund.org/get-involved to see upcoming events you can take part in, or visit www.thesunshinefund.org/other-events to see if there are any external challenges you can join to raise funds for us.

We still have spaces left on our Hadrian’s Wall trek which will take a group along a 13-mile route which must be completed in 8 hours. Not only will trekkers explore some of the region’s most iconic landmarks bursting with history, but they will reach inclines up to 1,000 ft. If you would like to join us, please contact Amanda.Keddie@thesunshinefund.org now!

You can also support us and win something back by entering our weekly £1 lottery, where players have the chance of winning the national prize of £25,000, as well as monthly bonus prizes and a local prize pot. This month, you have the chance of winning a Nintendo Switch Bundle, or a £1,000 cash prize! Sign up now at https://bit.ly/3WYQkbm.

Thanks for reading,

Sophie X
