Lots to celebrate at Team Sunshine

Hello Sunshine News readers,

Like the rest of Newcastle, we’ve been footy mad here at Sunshine HQ of late and we have loved seeing lots of photos of our children and the schools we support donning their black and white in support of NUFC’s Carabao Cup campaign.

Whilst last weekends defeat was a disappointing result for some of us, we have had lots of amazing things to celebrate here at Team Sunshine (and we’re still very proud of you, lads! Especially Dan Burn, he's from Blythhhh). Firstly, our friends over at The Gym Group completed their 118,000m Row-a-Thon, rowing the length of the Tyne over a 10 hour period.

This was a massive challenge, and the team did an amazing job to complete it in the time they did whilst raising an incredible £260 in support of our Sunshine Children. A massive thank you to Rick, Kyle and the whole team at Gym Group Newcastle East for their continued support; you’re all legends!

From one exciting sporting event to another, the Mini, Junior and Accessible Great North Run 2023 ballot is now officially open. Team Sunshine will be back with our VIP area located on Newcastle Quayside; the perfect location to absorb the action and atmosphere of the day!

We are so grateful to our friends at True Potential for once again sponsoring our Great North Run campaign and championing our Team Mini Sunshine runners, walkers and wheelers.

Everyone here at Team Sunshine loves the Mini, Junior and Accessible 50 events and the opportunity they provide our Sunshine Children. Last year’s event was particularly special, as it brought together two of Team Sunshine’s most loyal supporters in a beautiful way!

Eight year old Penny Turner, who has Spina Bifida, has taken part in the Great North Accessible 50 for Team Sunshine since 2019 and came out on top in both the 2019 and 2021 races. Hoping to gain her hat-trick in last year’s race, Penny was worried when the date reschedule meant her support runner was no longer available on the day of the race.

After Penny’s mum reached out for a volunteer on Facebook, another Team Sunshine super supporter, Michelle Embleton, stepped up to the challenge. Michelle has supported The Sunshine Fund for several years, taking part in the Great North Run multiple times and raising thousands alongside her son Charlie, who has also taken part in the Mini and Junior events.

Penny was thrilled to take Michelle up on her offer and after a few training runs, the pair took first in last year’s race, gaining Penny her hat-trick after all! We can’t wait to see what Penny achieves at this year’s event.

This week also saw the official launch of the soirée of the season as we announced The Bridgertoon Ball will be held at The Grand Hotel, Gosforth Park on Friday, September 29. Guests can expect a night of dancing, dukes and promenades at the most regal event the Toon has to offer.

All guests are encouraged to dress to theme, so tiaras, tulle and tails are most welcome! Tickets and tables are now on sale and we have just one sponsorship opportunity left, if you want your chance to be crowned Diamond of the Season, don’t delay.

All-in-all it’s been a wonderful week and it’s safe to say we’re excited for the year ahead! For more information on Mini and Junior Great North Run, or to purchase tickets or a table for The Bridgertoon Ball, contact me, TCSF Events Coordinator Erin: erin.todd@thesunshinefund.org.
